Trent Dilfer: UAB Fires Blazers Coach Halfway Through 2025 Season

"Birmingham, AL - University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) has terminated the contract of head football coach Trent Dilfer, bringing an end to a tumultuous three-year stint marked by a woeful 9-21 record. The decision, announced Sunday, comes on the heels of a 53-33 loss to Florida Atlantic, leaving the Blazers with a 2-4 record and a string of three consecutive defeats.
According to UAB athletic director Mark Ingram, the team's on-field performance has consistently failed to meet expectations. "We agree that — unfortunately — our on-field performance has not lived up to the standard of winning we have for the program," Ingram said in a statement. "This decision will allow us to move forward in the best long-term interest of the program."
Dilfer, a former NFL quarterback, was hired in 2023 with the promise of restoring UAB's football program to its former glory. However, his tenure has been marred by a series of lackluster performances, including a 4-8 record in his first season and a 3-9 record in 2024. The 53-33 loss to FAU was the final straw, prompting UAB to part ways with the embattled coach.
